Ready to build on your beginner quilting skills?

If you joined us for the Beginner Quilting Class in March, this is your natural next step. And if you didn’t - but you’re comfortable cutting fabric, sewing consistent seams, and pressing accurately - you’re welcome too!

In this three-part workshop, Mary McFarlane will guide you through creating a Disappearing 4-Patch quilt top.

Mary will also share examples of the Disappearing Nine Patch, so if you become completely hooked (which happens often!), you’ll leave with the knowledge and skills to explore that variation on your own.

  • Class 1 – Introduction & Practice Block. We’ll explore the concept of the disappearing block technique and create a practice square to understand how cutting and reassembling transforms your patchwork. You’ll begin planning your quilt layout and fabric choices.
  • Class 2 – Constructing Your Blocks. This session is all about sewing, refining and troubleshooting. You'll construct a collection of disappearing 4-patch blocks and gain confidence in precision cutting and consistent seam allowances.
  • Class 3 – Bringing the Quilt Top Together. We'll assemble your quilt top and discuss next steps for finishing.

Additionally, throughout the workshop, Mary will demonstrate several techniques, including: sashing (fabric strips between blocks), cornerstones (small squares at block intersections), and adding borders to frame your quilt.

You’ll also learn about quilting, backing, and binding so you understand the complete process from top to finished quilt.

While you won’t complete the entire quilt during class, you’ll leave with:

  • All (or nearly all) pieces of your quilt top made
  • A clear understanding of how to layer, quilt, and bind at home
  • The skills and confidence to finish your quilt independently

Who This Class Is For: Graduates of Tiny Cheer Handmade’s Beginner Quilting class; Confident beginner sewists ready for their first full quilt top; Anyone curious about taking their patchwork to the next level.

Supplies:
Please bring your sewing machine along with a basic sewing kit (scissors, pins, thread, seam ripper, etc.). If you have them, also bring a rotary cutter, cutting mat, and acrylic quilting ruler. If not, these tools will be available to share in the studio.

You’ll also need to bring fabric: quilting cotton works best, but upcycled options are welcome. Thrifted or secondhand bedsheets are a similar weight to quilting cotton and work well for quilt tops. Cotton or flannel sheets are also an excellent choice for quilt backing fabric. See fabric requirements, below.

Fabric requirements (using 5" squares):
For a standard baby-sized (approx. 40" x 40") disappearing 4-patch quilt top, you will need approximately one charm pack (42 squares of 5" x 5") or 3/4 yard of light/background fabric and 3/4 yard of contrasting print fabric. This allows for cutting forty 5" squares to create the necessary 4-patch blocks.
