Soft Circuits
What are soft circuits?
Soft circuits (also called e-textiles) are electrical circuits made with flexible, fabric-friendly materials such as conductive thread and fabrics instead of traditional rigid wires. In a soft circuit, electricity flows along stitches sewn into felt or cloth to power LEDs, sensors, switches, and other small electronic components. They can appear in wearable accessories, art, costumes — any textile that integrates lights and electronics without soldering.
Conductive thread behaves much like ordinary sewing thread but carries an electrical current between components like a battery, LEDs, and switches. This lets makers embed functioning circuits directly into fabric designs.
Why we love teaching Soft Circuits...
Soft circuits are one of our favourite ways to help kids discover that science is not only understandable, it is creative, playful, and full of possibility. They blend art, design, problem-solving, and science in a way that feels natural, playful, and deeply engaging.
Instead of memorizing how circuits work, students build them. They plan their layouts, troubleshoot stitches, test ideas, and learn how electricity flows through a circuit by seeing their own projects light up.

Founder & Lead Educator, Soft Circuits
Hello! I’m Sara. I live in Guelph and love sewing, crafting and gathering together with others to make things.
I am the Founder and Lead Artist/Educator for “Soft Circuits in Schools” where we design and make super cool sewing projects with kids that, literally, light up. This work is a wonderful coming together of my background as an elementary educator, tech-integration enthusiast and my love for creating with others.
